Popayan Decaf

A sweet, toffee-forward Colombian decaf that's easy to love in milk drinks, even if you're still finding your feet as a home barista.
My experience
I bought this without trying it first, and it hasn't disappointed. I've been using it with my Breville Barista Slimline and the pressurised portafilter that came with the machine, and from about cup 3 (once I finally worked out how much coffee to use) it's been amazing. Whether it's a single-shot cortado, a double-shot latte, or a flat white, you can really taste the toffee notes in this one.
I drink both cow's milk and coconut milk, and this coffee pairs well with either.
Worth noting: at the time of buying and writing this, I don't have a grinder, so this was bought as pre-ground coffee.
The crema is lovely, though quite strong — you definitely need to mix it in rather than drink it on its own. I haven't enjoyed it neat, though that might say more about my barista skills (or lack of them) than the coffee itself.
What I liked
- Toffee flavour genuinely comes through, even as a beginner
- Works well with both dairy and non-dairy milk
- Forgiving if your dose/grind isn't dialled in perfectly yet
What I didn't
- Crema is strong enough that you need to stir it in properly
- Haven't tried it black or via filter yet, so can't comment on that side
Who would like this
Anyone new to decaf who's worried it'll taste worse than regular coffee. This one doesn't feel like a compromise, and if you mostly drink milk-based coffees, the toffee sweetness comes through nicely.
Who might not
If you like your coffee sharp and acidic, or you drink it black most of the time, this might feel a bit one-note — I've only had it with milk so far, so I can't speak to how it holds up on its own.
Best brewing method
Espresso machine — that's all I've tried it as so far, and honestly I haven't felt the need to try anything else yet.
